Gantt chart — an overview

What is it for?

This template is great for showing project schedules. Each Gantt represents an event or task from a start and end date or time, as well as the main category it belongs to. This chart type could also be useful to show a timeline of events.

How to get started

The first thing you need is some data that shows one event per row (long format), including a start and end date/time. Below is an example of how your data should look:

If your data isn't in a long format, you can change this using the Flourish unpivoting feature.

Upload this data into Flourish and bind the columns to the relevant bindings in the Data tab. The data example above will give a good indication of what each data binding will do.



TIP: You can add additional information for your popup panels in the Info for popups column binding.

Head over to the Preview tab and start editing the appearance of your Gantt chart!

Editing your Gantt chart

There are a couple of different styling options you can use to customize your Gantt chart.

You are able to choose whether you show text on your Gantts and how it appears within the Labels setting.

Within the X axis settings, you can edit the Date and time parsing and formatting options. Here you can specify the correct time format to suit your data, whether that be in minutes, days, months, or years. You can also specify the Date and Time Locale to be accessible for all. You can also change the display of the X axis as well as its styling.

Add a filter to your Gantt chart by adding a column to the Filter binding in the Data tab. For example, you could filter bars by your Color, Task, or Grouping column, or a separate column altogether. 



When you add a Filter, by default it will enable the Include All option so that your dropdown includes an option to show all the bars at once as well.

Similar to our other templates, you can use custom color palettes, as well as using  Custom overrides within the Colors settings.

Utilizing our Popup panels feature, you can add more than just a popup to your Gantts. Here you can add additional information directly or from your data tab with columns specified in the Info for popups binding. You can use the customization options provided to change the display of your popups and panels, or use the custom content option, which offers the ability to use HTML.
